Borders may be closed but that did not stop the Olympics from coming to Alexandra last Friday.

The annual Central Otago Combined Rest Homes sports day took on an Olympic theme this year, in honour of the sporting event which starts later this month.

About 80 people attended the event and rest-homes from Alexandra, Roxburgh, Cromwell, Queenstown, Wanaka and Ranfurly, each represented their chosen country.

Central Otago District Mayor Tim Cadogan opened the event, and Gerry Sawers carried in the Olympic torch.

“You’re one step ahead of the actual Olympics have spectators,” Mr Cadogan told the crowd.

Participants took part in basketball, bowls, cornhole, shot put, golf putting and soccer kicks.

Organiser Pat O’Connor said the event had been running for the past five years and was an opportunity for residents to get together and try something new.
