Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade firefighter Gilbert Stace has been recognised for his long firefighting service with the presentation of his 50-year service award.

Cromwell fire chief Steve Shaw praised Mr Stace for his long firefighting service and said it represented the other valuable service given by other firefighters.

Other long service and good conduct awards were presented during a recent honours ceremony in Cromwell, including gold bar awards for 31 years’ service to Mr Shaw and John Searle.

Mr Stace has been with the Cromwell brigade for about three years, having served before that with the Governor’s Bay and Sumner brigades, in Christchurch.
