Oturehua welcomed about 120 descendants of pioneer settlers James and Jane McKnight (nee McPake) on Boxing Day for the 150th anniversary of James McKnight emigrating to New Zealand from Scotland in 1869. Descendants of the couple, Graeme and Alistair McKnight, still farm Braeside station in Oturehua, and the family has many links to the area. The oldest descendant attending was Doreen Noone (91), of Timaru. Her parents ran Gilchrist’s store in Oturehua for many years. Stewart McKnight, of Ranfurly, at 84, said he was the last surviving grandson of Jane and James McKnight. He was the “youngest son of the youngest son”, he said. His father was James and Jane McKnight’s son Frederick Gemmel McKnight. Organisers Tricia McKnight and Kathryn McConnell said family members travelled from across Australia and New Zealand to attend.
