‘Dam Busters’ to raise jamboree funds

A ‘‘Dam Busters’’ rogaine will both entertain the children and raise money for a big Scout jamboree, organisers say.
The September 18 rogaine/orienteering/treasure-hunt event was a fundraiser for the Alexandra Scouts and a great team event for families or orienteering beginners, parent Stu Middendorf said.
‘‘Three hours walking in the hills, treasure for the kids to find, and a barbecue at the end with a chance of a prize — a great half a day out with the family.’’
The ‘‘Dam Busters’’ event would be held at the Lower Manorburn Reserve. Teams will be given a map of the area and then need to visit as many waypoints as possible in three hours.
‘‘Different waypoints are worth differing amounts of points and some are easier to get to than others. Teams then set off navigating their way but they have to be back at the start before the three hours is up or they begin to lose points.’’
Proceeds of the event would go towards Alexandra Scouts attending this year’s Scout jamboree in Blenheim in December, Mr Middendorf said.
About 19 Scouts and three leaders will attend.
Cromwell and Queenstown Scouts and leaders are also attending the 10-day jamboree, which is a national gathering of New Zealand Scouts that takes place every four years.
The Alexandra Scouts would also be doing other jamboree fundraisers, such as a quiz night and monster sale, he said. – For more information about the rogaine, go to the Dam Busters 2016 Facebook page.
