Sixty winter crops were entered in the Upper Clutha Cropping Competition.

Mr Scott said judges were looking for an exceptional crop that was weed-free, with healthy plants and a great weight.

“We found that on Hayden’s farm,” Mr Scott said.

Mr Dickey said he knew it was a good kale crop, but the win “was a bit of a surprise really”.

The competition was organised by the Rotary Club of Wanaka, and supported by the Tarras School community and Tarras Young Farmers.

More than 100 farmers and 30 sponsors attended the awards ceremony at Pembroke Pavilion on Friday, June 11, which included a fundraising auction.
