The foundations of a better water supply for Alexandra have been laid.

The construction of a new drinking water reservoir along Gilligans Gully Rd is under way.

The Central Otago District Council said on social media the concrete foundation was being laid, with commissioning of the 4000cu m tank set to align with the completion of the Lake Dunstan water supply.

With the capacity to hold enough water to fill the Alexandra swimming pool more than three times, the treated water storage reservoir will play a critical role in providing Alexandra with improved water quality.

The wider water supply project was first consulted on in the 2018 long-term plan and installation of the pipeline to carry the water from the bore site at Clyde to the treatment plant in Alexandra at the Northern Reservoir began in May 2019 and was completed in July last year.

Construction of the new treatment plant was originally scheduled to be completed by mid-2020, but was delayed by both the discovery of Lindavia algae in Lake Dunstan and the need for further consideration of the project’s filtration system, as well as Covid-19 setbacks.

The revised date of autumn 2022 completion has now been further extended due to international supply and shipping issues related to the continued impact of Covid-19.

That means Alexandra residents have Christmas 2022 to look forward to as the expected date to receive an improved quality of water supply.
