‘Balance’ workshops aim to reduce pupils’ stress

A series of workshops offered by Cromwell Youth Trust aims to bring balance and less stress for pupils.

Lead Youth Worker Rhys Smith said the trust ran youth development programmes to develop new skills, and their latest programme called ‘Find your Balance’ focused on positive mental health.

Four workshops would be offered on fitness and nutrition, meditation, yoga and massage.

Young people could take the learning into their lives to “help de-stress and feel relaxed”.

It could be a stressful time for pupils as they headed into exams over the coming months.

By offering the programme in collaboration with local businesses, Mr Smith hoped it would help pupils not only during study and exams, but also with future life challenges.

Central Fitness Cromwell, Central Yoga Studio, Alexandra Flow Space Wellness Centre and La Touch Cromwell had contributed their services, meaning there would only be a nominal charge of $5 for each workshop.

All four of workshops had elements that related to positive mental health, Mr Smith said.

Myah Scott (17) said as a year 13 pupil who had been through National Certificate of Educational Achievement exams twice, it was “really helpful to have time to not think about exams”.

The end of year was “pretty much a month of full-on academics” so the workshops could help pupils relax.

Taking part in a brief introduction to mindfulness led by Angela Connell, of Flow Space Wellness Centre in Alexandra, Myah said she was not expecting it to be so effective.

“It is good to get to try things and to learn about different opportunities and different ways to deal with things.”

There was “so much pressure” for pupils, especially for seniors, “the stress can really build up over time”.

Having access to these workshops would be “really effective, really good”, Myah said.

The trust recently received a grant of $99,678 from the Central Lakes Trust towards its 2020 operational budget.

Since he was brought on as a new lead youth worker in May Mr Smith had seen a 200% increase in youth participation numbers for the trust’s services.

The dates for the workshops are from October 29 to November 1.

Seniors from years 11 to 13 will be able to take part in the workshops by booking at cromwellyouthtrust.co.nz.
