Growing business moves to new premises

One-stop cycle shop Bike It Now! has rolled into its new premises, one door up from the old one in Holloway St, Clyde.
Since buying the business in 2013, owners Kathryn ‘‘Fletch’’ Fletcher, Lisa Joyce and Duncan Randall have continued to expand Bike It Now! in the region.
Over the past 12 months, the owners saw how much the business was growing, which necessitated the move to new premises.
In the beginning the business was two companies, Bike It Now and Active Travel Company, but when the trio bought it they decided to merge operations under the Bike It Now! brand.
Fletch said it was important to give the business a wider presence, rather than just focusing on the Otago Central Rail Trail.
‘‘We are a cycle company.’’
All three moved from Dunedin and, using Lisa’s IT and accounting background, Duncan’s retail expertise and Fletch’s long-term physical education work, teamed up to transform the business.
Bike It Now! was initially in one end of the building, but the trio have expanded across the whole building, adding a retail area and workshop.
In the beginning there were only three permanent staff, but now there is a team of 13, comprising seven permanent staff, two schoolboys and four drivers.
Fletch said one of the reasons Bike It Now! worked so well was because customer service had always been its No 1 priority.
‘‘Customer service doesn’t cost you a thing. Someone is always there with a cheery hello, gidday mate and a smile when you open the door.’’
Bike It Now! has an extensive client base from all over the Otago-Southland region and further afield, with regular bikers coming through from Queenstown, Dunedin, Wanaka and Invercargill.
All the staff are riders themselves, although they don’t get to ride as much as they would like, Fletch says.
Bike It Now! not only has quality service, but also quality products.
Avanti, Scott and Trek are the three main bike brands sold and Bike It Now! hires out Scott and Avanti bikes, including e-bikes.
Fletch said Trek was new to the business, with Bike It Now! taking on the b and just eight months ago.
Duncan oversees the retail side of the business and has more than 13 years’ experience in the industry.
‘‘You can always guarantee that someone will always be able to answer your question, and you are guaranteed a bit of chat,’’ Fletch said.
In the beginning, Bike It Now! focused solely on the Otago Central Rail Trail, but it now operates on all trails throughout the wider region, including supported tours on the Alps to Ocean.
Bike It Now! offers packages for all Otago trails. The business is all about the customer and is open seven days a week, allowing customers to come in at any time to discuss options and have a tour customised to suit them.
The staff are excited about moving into the new building this weekend because it has clearly designated areas for each aspect of the business.
‘‘We’re going from five spaces to one, but the building has been constructed with us in mind, so we had some input on the interior layout,’’ Fletch said.
Landlord Mark Laing had worked with the team to build the new premises and had been able to source materials which made the new space fit in with the rest of the street and town, she said.
Bike It Now! loves being in Clyde, as residents support the town’s businesses, which are open seven days a week, Fletch says.
‘‘It’s the positive attitude from retailers. We all complement each other, with more and more businesses opening in the near future.’’
Bike It Now! could not have grown to where it is today without the support of all those who had been involved in the business in some shape or form.
‘‘From accommodation providers through to cycle wholesalers and everyone in between, we wouldn’t have got here without them,’’ Fletch said.
The grand opening is this Saturday, and there will be music, a sausage sizzle and deals on offer.
