A new senior Blossom Festival queen has been crowned and that new titleholder could not be prouder.

Gwen Harrex was presented with flowers and her crown during a ceremony in Alexandra on Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m not usually speechless, but I am,” she said, as she took it all in.

Her fellow contestants were on hand to give her congratulatory hugs, including runner-up Rosemary Magrath.

The pair discovered throughout the competition that they are second cousins, have a similar amount of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and both have one more great-grandchild on the way.

All of the women were nominated for the event, which not only resulted in a lot of “fun”, but also new friendships.

This year’s crowning ceremony featured a range of entertainment throughout the afternoon, including performances by singers and dancers.

The event, which is one of many that features on the Alexandra Blossom Festival calendar, took a break last year due to a lack of nominations.

However, nomination numbers were up again this year, allowing the event to return.

The event marks the start of the Blossom Festival, which will feature a range of events throughout the weekend including The News Round the Clock Race and Mardi Gras on Friday night.

Festivities will continue on Saturday with a grand parade and party in the park, among many other activities.
