Running away to the circus

Children got a taste of the big top this week in Alexandra, thanks to Queenstown circus artist and teacher Abigail Rose.

Miss Rose said the simple lessons for children aged from 4 to 10 provided an introduction to a range of circus skills including trapeze, aerial silks, acrobatics, juggling and hula hoops.

“There is something for everyone.

“They don’t have to be physically strong or capable to do everything I teach them.”

The classes helped teach working together lot of safety involved, so you have to look out for each other, you are climbing on each other, you are watching out for your peers”.

Skills such as juggling used the mind as well as requiring co-ordination.

The children were “really focused” during the lessons, “because there are so many different aspects to the circus”.

“It’s also new for Alexandra, so I am excited.”

Miss Rose will be running another series of classes next Monday.
