Intricate flowers made from icing, along with perfectly formed decorated cakes took centre stage in Alexandra last weekend.
The artistic cakes were on display as part of the Central Otago Cake Decorating Club’s open day, hosted at Community House in Alexandra.
A steady stream of people made the most of the opportunity to view some of the cakes on display, including youngsters who also got a chance to try their hand at decorating cupcakes.
The event was designed to raise the club’s profile and money, as the group prepares to host the New Zealand Cake Decorators Guild Conference in Alexandra next year.
It will be the first time Alexandra has hosted the event, an idea initially suggested at last year’s conference.
When members started taking the lighthearted suggestion a bit more seriously, they realised Alexandra was the perfect location and set to work on applying to be hosts.
The club has about 16 members, who meet on the third Tuesday of the month at Ranui at 7.30pm.
Among them is club secretary Kim Marsh, who joined to learn the art of traditional cake decorating.
“These ladies have some of the knowledge that you just can’t get online anymore,” she said.
“You can only get it from them,” she said of her fellow club members.
The club also provides members with problem-solving techniques and an opportunity to share ideas.
“It’s lots of laughs more than anything.”
