A love of reading won Omakau School pupil Kate Williams a new tablet.
Kate took part in the the Central Otago Summer Reading Challenge, run by the Central Otago district libraries during the school holidays.
Alexandra Library team leader Vicki Darling said the challenge received 308 registrations district-wide and 113 completed the challenge.
Kate read several books and completed some physical activities, all of which were listed on a form that had to be filled out and returned.
She completed two forms.
‘‘I enjoy reading, as it’s fun,’’ she said.
‘‘I like Enid Blyton books, like The Famous Five, the Mystery series, the Adventure series and Malory Towers.’’
Ms Darling said the challenge was designed to encourage literacy and those who reached the halfway point received the choice of either a DVD voucher or a mystery science pack to encourage them to keep going.
‘‘We are really pleased with that,’’ Ms Darling said.
‘‘We did a bit of a push to do some little bit different.’’
Children under 5 who completed their challenge received a picture book and those over 5 had the choice of a book or a Lego mini figurine.
Every completed form went into a draw for a Samsung Galaxy Tablet donated by Smiths Alexandra manager Rebeka Skerrett.
