Alexandra acting duo Barry Gibbons and Joy Ramsay are celebrating their success in the national TheatreFest awards. The pair won three national awards between them for their performance of the one-act play Carol and Nev at the nationals in Invercargill on September 9-10, following competitive regional and South Island rounds and previous public performances in Central Otago. Gibbons and Ramsay, who are members of the Alexandra Musical Society and Clyde Theatre Group respectively, won the award for best production of a New Zealand play and best adult production, and Ramsay won the best actor female. They said they were thrilled with their success and grateful for professional feedback received during the adjudication process. The play, which they self-directed, was a magical “no bells and whistles” story which tugged at the heartstrings and made people “both laugh and cry”, they said. They intended doing more drama productions in the district – including another performance of Carol and Nev – and said they were proud to have taken a local production to a national level. “It’s affirming to know that the level of theatre locally is such that we can hold our heads up nationally,” Ramsay said.
