The Dunstan High School senior girls’ choir has won silver at the 29th Australian International Music Festival in Sydney.
Musical director John Buchanan said the choir, comprising girls from years 11, 12 and 13, performed at the Sydney Opera House last week, took part in workshops and performed at the Sydney Town Hall.
Choir member and one of the leaders, Ally Hamill (17), said it was a “pretty cool experience”.
“There was a lot of hard work and singing while we were there, but it was quite enjoyable.”
There were opportunities to mingle with other performers, including choirs from Czechoslovakia and the United States, Ally said.
More than 900 pupils from around the world took part in the festival, which included wind bands, orchestras, choirs and jazz bands.
Ally was hoping to win silver, “but then after we heard all the other choirs I thought they are very, very good, so I was maybe expecting bronze when we got into it.”
Everyone in the choir was “really, really happy with silver”, she said.
