One of the most popular fairy tales of all time will be retold next month by the Alexandra Musical Society’s Children’s Theatre.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, by Tim Kelly with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur, is a retelling of the classic Grimm brothers’ tale that will be familiar to audiences young and old.
Under the guidance of director Pat Lines, musical director Billie Tohill and choreographer Sonia Dodd, the cast of 17 children ranging in age from 9 to 13 have been rehearsing since January.
The cast is made up of mainly Alexandra and Clyde children but two cast members have been making the trip across from Wanaka for the regular practices.
Director Pat Lines said this week the show was coming along nicely and the children had been working extremely hard. She wished to thank all the production team and parent helpers working behind the scenes.
Audiences could expect a lively performance, colourful characters and costumes, beautiful singing and dancing, and a delightful set built by Keith Parks, painted by Graeme Miller and dressed by Jan Forrest in props, she said.
Alexandra Musical Society president and production manager for Snow White Trevor Goudie said the children’s theatre was structured to give young people an introduction to theatre.
“For some of the children involved this will lead to a lifelong passion for the theatre. Two of my boys started with children’s theatre and went on to do performing arts degrees, and many other young folk in our community have followed a similar path. It serves to show the real contribution to the performing arts that children’s theatre makes.”
The auditions back in December had attracted more than 40 children for a show with 16 parts, and that level of enthusiasm boded well for the future of the society in Central Otago, Mr Goudie said.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, by the Alexandra Musical Society’s Children’s Theatre, runs from Tuesday April 9 to Sunday April 14 at the Alexandra Musical Society clubrooms on Enterprise St.
There will be five evening shows (7pm start) and two weekend matinee performances (2pm).
