The Alexandra Musical Society’s next swashbuckling production features some Boy’s Own-style stageplay, director Bryan Aitken says.
A large number of male performers featured in the Gilbert and Sullivan musical The Pirates of Penzance and they were enjoying both the musical and non-musical parts of rehearsals, Mr Aitken said.
‘‘They’re having a great time learning all the sword-fighting sequences.’’
Nicholas Goudie plays the lead male, Frederic, Grant Radka plays the comedic lead, the Pirate King, and Natalija Krsinic is the Major General’sdaughter, Mabel.
The three Alexandra performers said they were loving the Gilbert and Sullivan music and the camaraderie between performers. All three have been in various Alexandra Musical Society productions before, and said they were relishing the humour and wellknown songs in the show.
Mr Aitken said the original Victorian music of The Pirates of Penzance had had a ‘‘makeover’’ for today’s audiences, with some ’80s pop orchestrations mixed in.
‘‘It’s a bit of a musical laugh.’’ – The Pirates of Penzance opens at the Alexandra Memorial Theatre on September 24 and runs until September 30.
